Nowhere is a 2D space exploration game, built by two people with Unity in one week, in November 2025. You fly a ship seen from above, land on a planet, then explore it on foot in side view, before calling your rocket back to leave.
A universe drawn from a seed
Everything starts from an eight-character seed, typed in or picked at random. The same seed always gives the same universe: the position of the planets, their type, their size and their name all derive from it.
- Space is split into areas, generated around the ship and unloaded as it moves away.
- A planet’s terrain comes from fractal noise, smoothed in several passes, with steps and flat areas to keep it playable.
- The ground is layered into grass, dirt and stone. Each tile picks its shape from its neighbours.
- The map is drawn in pieces around the player, and decorations are scattered on the surface.
The rest of the game
- Creatures patrol the planets; you get rid of them by jumping on them.
- The starry background is a shader: a nebula and three layers of stars scrolling at different speeds, also drawn from the seed.
- The game saves automatically and the keys can be rebound.
Architecture
A bootstrap script creates the managers at launch, a state machine follows the flow of the game, and the generation settings live in ScriptableObjects, so they can be tuned without touching the code.
